About Us

The White Horse is a prominent land mark in Epsom, lying next to the Hospital as you approach Epsom from the Ashtead/Leatherhead direction.

The pub is, we believe, the oldest standing pub in Epsom, having been mentioned in Sir Samual Pepys diary when he visited Epsom in 1672 to partake the Epsom Salts. Epsom was a spa town in those days, famous for the laxative quality of the salts found in the spring just a few hundred yards from the pub. This spring can be visited today as it is marked by a well in the aptly named "Wells Estate" - just turn left out of the pub and proceed up the hill for 500 yards, taking a right turn into Wells Road.

As the nearest pub in Epsom to the famous spring we've incorporated it into our pub sign, along with the obvious connection to a white horse. Just remember not to stand behind the horse though after it's drunk a whole bucket of Epsom spring water!

The White Horse site has also had a very long association with brewing, and the White Horse brewery once stood on this site, where the play area and the far side of the car park are now, for many years at the turn of the century. It would be great one day to see a return of brewing to the site!

The building itself is grade 2 listed, and beneath the current exterior there lurks the original timber frame cottage style structure. The Victorians added the front of the pub, including the low wall at the top which makes it look as though the pub has a flat roof. Apparently this was highly fashionable at one stage!
